OUR STORY

Get A Life was established in 2007 by Dr. Leon Crawford. Inspired by a visit to The Dream Center in Los Angeles, California, he was determined to effect change within his own community. As he walked through The Dream Center, he saw firsthand the impact of providing food, healthcare, and love at no cost. Moved by this, he returned to Michigan, gathering volunteers and individuals eager to give back, all united by the mission to support those in need. Unsure of the community's needs, they let the residents' voices guide them. Dr. Crawford and his team canvassed a 16-block radius, asking residents, "How can I help you?" They discovered a common need for resources. Get A Life Inc. started by distributing food boxes every Saturday. Noticing the neighborhood's need, they also provided basic yard maintenance, such as snow shoveling and leaf raking. Initially, they supported about 40 families per month with food boxes and assisted 15 families with yard work, all free of charge. As word spread, a partnership with Forgotten Harvest was formed, enabling them to feed 500 families monthly. Dr. Crawford, who holds a special place in his heart for the youth, led initiatives to distribute bikes and toys to children during Christmas. The Kids Kare program has benefited over 250 children with holiday gifts. Additionally, they provide shoes for children returning to school. In 2018, Dr. Crawford sought to aid young men, recalling his own experiences with his father and recognizing a lack in the community. This led to the creation of the Boys2Men summer program, aiming to empower, encourage, educate, and influence young men towards independence through developmental programs.
